Mother/Short Story Excerpt

     Mother       Ian adjusted his field glasses and looked out at the arid wasteland that started just under his chin and stretched out to the horizon. Behind him the jungle stopped abruptly as if something had taken a great chunk out of the Home World, leaving the white sand dropping away and turning to ochre as it approached the horizon under the setting sunlight.       Behind him there were bird calls, in front of him only the occasional sizzle of sand running downwards.      It wasn’t natural, something had created it and Ian kept wondering what it was. He was pretty certain that there was a deep crater or canyon out there in the middle of this desert as you would see plumes of dust rising vertically once in a while, but it was impossible to say if this was a sign of Others or just air currents kicking up.      There was no going out there to see though, as the desert was still one of the many Forbidden...

His only companion is an AI computer that calls itself 'Mother.' Mother's job is to help the colonists adjust the life of the new planet by bioengineering and selective breeding so that the planet will be more suitable for humans to live on. Writing What You Know

Writing From What You Know Writers often get the advice to 'write what you know.' It's kind of humorous advice, if you mainly write science fiction. I'm a composer of alternative rock music and you can find my music here on my Official Artist Website  Occasionally, however, I will write an album of program music that is most often descriptive of a science fiction theme. Most notable is the ' Tea With The Alien ' album. This album has numerous short stories and books associated with it. The track ' The Dimensional Badinage , for example, has a short story associated with it called ' Just Sign On The Dotted Line .' For this short story, I took the 'write what you know' advice to heart.  The first part of this story is based on a true event. I really did see something unexplainable in the sky from my porch in Chino on the fourth of July. The guard who walks by in the story was really there and he saw it too. He also really said "oh, ...
